While she grew up in a musical family in North Carolina, vocalist Rebekah Victoria eventually settled in California to pursue her passion in jazz. For her first album, she chose classics that would challenge her. Discovering the essence and soul in each standard was her first objective. Then, her goal was to sculpt each song so it would reflect her style. With pleasant verve, Victoria’s album succeeds on many levels capturing her personality, featuring solid accompanists and guest instrumental soloists, and presenting a generous set of 16 songs from the Great American Songbook. While some of the arrangements may seem a tad standard, it’s a classy debut and showcase for Rebekah Victoria who clearly loves to sing and has the talent for much continued success. She’s proud of being old-fashioned, and we’re certainly happy that she is keeping her presentation fairly straight-forward in the tradition of many great vocalists who have gone before.
