Perhaps “Mean Mary” James earned that moniker with her decidedly not-shabby banjo work, but meanness would not seem to factor into this singer/multi-instrumentalist’s skillful manner with pleasant, frequently downright pretty, folk-grounded melodies and earthy, warm-blooded lyric readings.  Ms. James works these qualities through a set of charming and varied originals and collaborations, showing off a knack for tasteful, minimal production touches as well.  Standouts include “Born To Be That Woman”, “Rainbow Reef” and the catchy, ska-flavored title track.
