Italy has a good name as a source for progressive instrumental rock music since the late 1970s and before. Some legendary players still release music over there and to that list you can add the name The Lost Vision of The Chandoo Priest. That’s quite a mouthful as the band name is the same name of their full-length debut CD. Spearheading the group is Francesca Zanetta and Niccolo’ Gallani.

Ms. Zanetta shines on a number of instruments including electric guitar, bass guitar, Eminent Solina, Logan String Melody 2, Elka Rhapsody 490, Moog Voyager while Niccolo brings in drums, bass guitar, electric guitar, Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ, mellotron, Elka Soloist 505, flute. Vintage synth mavens will have a field day with the diversity of electronic sounds and effects on this album.

Just like the album cover, the sound is dream-like and definitely prog-rock driven, albeit from an instrumental rock perspective. It’s not close to surf-rock or fusion but it carves a unique niche in the spirit of the great Italian prog-rock pioneers of the mid to late 1970s. The album is also notable as it was recorded during the pandemic of 2020-21 and it has a very isolating vibe to it, seemingly suspended from all time and space.

Whether you dig 1970’s style instrumental prog-rock, both from the Italian or Canterbury progressive styles, there is plenty of both on hand with The Lost Vision of The Chandoo Priest. A recent release on the wildly eclectic Italian AMS Records label.
