The CD release of Drums On Low is a really odd choice music release, yet, as an album of instrumental drum solos, it’s a good introduction to Wisconsin-based artist and drummer extraordinaire Dave Schoepke. Dave is not quite as daredevil a thumper as Bill Bruford or Ginger Baker, or Buddy Rich for that matter, yet there’s still plenty of inventive sound textures on hand, that blends jazzy, avant-garde and even rock elements. The avant-garde aspects of Drums On Low can’t be denied and the album is something that may appeal to fans of the late great classicist Edgard Varese, who often used percussion effects to create a wide range of often startling sound effects. Not just for drummers, Dave Schoepke’s Drums On Low may just start a new trend to showcase the power of percussion.
