As far as mainstream and bop jazz goes, back in the 1960’s much of it went right over the heads of the teenyboppers tuned into the latest Beatles single. Yet, there was clearly so much great jazz and early jazz fusion back in that golden decade. Jazz pioneers like John Coltrane and Miles Davis were truly in their prime, yet the name Wayne Shorter wouldn’t become world acclaimed for the most part until the sax / composer icon co-created the band Weather Report. Looking back 50+ years, two 21st century American musicians, Dave Askren (sax) and Jeff Benedict (guitars) revisit the musical compositions of Wayne Shorter on a 2019 CD called Paraphernalia: Music Of Wayne Shorter. The 10-track, 53-minute album features Dave and Jeff backed up by a fine rhythm section featuring Jonathan Pintoff (bass) and Chris Garcia (percussion). The CD starts off with a Wayne Shorter track featured, the title track in fact, on the Miles Davis album, E.S.P. from 1964 and from there the album revisits the realm of jazz-rock, albeit played with the same non-fusion, traditional jazz style that permeates this entire album. The CD features in-depth liner notes that sheds a light on the purposeful nature of this sonically pleasing set of classic jazz, brought up to date by the gifted musicianship of Dave Askren and Jeff Benedict and company. Still alive and well at age 86, New Jersey native, Wayne Shorter and his timeless musical presence is revisited and revered on Paraphernalia.
