As a child in Mallorca, Mar Grimalt wrote poems and made up songs that indicated she had a gift for music. With formal training, she now considers her songwriting to be like a purging process of knowledge and discovery. In 2020, Mar Grimalt and Carlos Otero (The Rio Ciclo duo) released their album Tu y yo Aqui, “a song to life, nature and the beings that inhabit it as dichotomous, linear and cyclical phenomena at the same time."

Grimalt’s musical creative process has now undergone further transformation, from lean compositions for voice, guitar and square tambourine, to ones that incorporate more eclectic and hybrid sounds with experimental music. Grimalt’s voice is still in the spotlight, along with her own accompaniment on classical guitar, square tambourine and farfisa.

After winning the 14th edition of the Sounds of the Mediterranean Contest, Mar Grimalt went deep into her own roots to create the sonic landscape for Espurnes i Coralls. With the accompaniment and musical production of Joana Gomila and Laia Vallés, Mar Grimalt found a universe based on the sounds of the machines in the family's construction factory. The creative process transformed elements from the family structure into personal and unique echoes, tones and harmonic environments.

Designed to be an immersive experience, the album requires one to think (and especially listen) somewhat outside the box. Don’t expect distinctive western melodies. Rather, use the canvas to paint your own vivid and impressionistic pictures while enjoying the journey. I’m told that the lyrics can be somewhat random and unexpected. I used the music as a springboard to my own personal meditations, contemplations and reflections. To plumb the terrain between romance and reality, the tracks are Vibrats I Pretensats, Dedins, Vessar, Recull De Versos, Una Capa, Un Dubte, Reset, Cançó Final, La Inutilitat and Espurnes I Coralls. They translate as Vibrated and Pretentious, Inside, Spilled, Collection of Verses, A Layer, A Doubt, Reset, Final Song, Uselessness and Sparks and Corals. (Joe Ross, Roots Music Report)
