Dan Modlin and Dave Scott have a knack for writing heartfelt songs of everyday experience, in the guise of the world-weary but wise and hopeful American traveler who's seen good times and bad, and can appreciate what's been learned from both. Musically, the dual acoustic guitar sound is nothing too fancy, but crisp and clear, evoking a nice mixture of folk, country and rock with a Celtic feel. Their high, intertwining harmonies also give many of the songs a Bluegrass feel. The title track, "Driven," and others, like "Whisky & Moonshine," "When Grant got to Vicksberg, and "Jack McCall Revisited" are good examples of simple but poignant storytelling with easy-going melodies. Some songs involve wiley characters on the run from something or someone, such as "Mexico," or combine trouble and mystery, "Jean and the River," while others, such as "My Memories Aren't that Good," call up the age-old problem of a special love lost -- and probably not to be found again.
