About the Album

For their fifth release, Tom Faia and Kate Miller, have amped things up, literally. Last year’s release, Risk it All for Love, topped the Roots Music Report’s Americana Chart at #1 for three weeks and is still in the top 20 a year later. It also made mid 100s in the AMA  chart.

This year they decided to explore the edgier side of things with the addition of guitar slinger, Tom Ayres. He is legendary around the San Francisco Bay area and had performed and recorded with; Persephone’s Bees, Chuck Prophet and Stephen Jenkins of Third Eye Blind.

According to Tom Faia, “ We felt after four albums we had explored as much of our acoustic side as we could, so we decided to bring in Ayres to kick up the sound up with his unique electric guitar style. This balances nicely off of my harp playing and adds some new energy.”

In addition to the usual crew backing Tom and Kate; Producer, Vince Sanchez on percussion and drums and Jessie Diaz on bass, several other musicians were asked to add their prodigious talents to the mix. Jimmy Norris (Lacy J Dalton, Caroline Sills Combo and Larry Hosford) sat in on drums, Craig Owens (Lacy J Dalton, Gary Burr), bass and Etienne David Franc (Check in the Dark, Leighton Meester, Chris Rene) on bass.

This album has Kate Miller expanding her role on vocals. She sings lead on three songs this outing and covers quite a stylistic range. From atmospheric, Out Comes the Sun, to Yacht Rockish, Forever, to full on Rock with, Good Love Goes Bad. This in additions to adding to some more complex vocal arrangements.

Tom holds his own and explores some different vocal stylings ranging from story teller Americana on, Big brother, to bluesy, Nobody Loves you for Free, to full on Roots Rock with, Give and Inch and They’ll Take a Mile and Nobody Loves you for Free.

The title track, Bad for Each Other, is a moody, mid tempo outing featuring both Tom and Kate on lead vocals along with a mesmerizing background vocal arrangement.

Overall we feel this album is a leap forward for a group that has already established itself.
