“When Lady J whips out that trumpet and begins to blow you know the show has started. This multi-talented, multi-award-winning artist with ties back to Albert King brings an easy rapport, an outstanding band and a mix of Jazz, Blues & Classic Soul to the stage.”
--Bob Baugh, Big City Rhythm & Blues
Lady J was inspired to sing and dance by her mother, Loyce Huston, a highly acclaimed songstress who helped nurture & catapult the careers of many St. Louis musicians. Lady J began dancing professionally at 12 years old on shows her mother produced and other dance groups. She completed High School early graduating as Valedictorian & voted the Most Talented Female Student. She accepted scholarships to the University of KS in voice, trumpet and academics, majoring in Music Theory/Composition. She took a hiatus returning to St. Louis & began singing with Johnnie Johnson (Father of Rock 'n Roll piano). At 18 years old, she began touring with Blues legend, Albert King, as Trumpeter, Vocalist & Music Director; performing on shows with greats such as: B.B. King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Etta James, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Bobby Blue Bland, Robert Cray & more! Following full time touring with Mr. King, she accepted a scholarship to Howard University & excelled to the Dean’s List as a Music Theory/Composition major with minors in voice & multiple instruments. Her final performance with King prior to his death in 1992, was at the Los Angeles Forum with a cavalcade of stars including; Bo Didley, Eddie Clean Head Vinson, Etta James & more!
Relocating to Los Angeles, CA, she earned a B.S.B.A., then moved to Las Vegas for 25 years winning multiple Best Blues Performer & Band awards, and reigned as Las Vegas Queen of Blues performing on festivals, showrooms and opening act for touring artist such as: Bobby Blue Bland, the Mannish Boys & Guitar Shorty. Due to an acute debilitating illness, she returned home to St. Louis with her mother in 2013 - she was told to get her final papers in order. With advanced medical centers in St. Louis and guidance from holistic healing specialists, she returned to the stage in 2018 with “The Lady J Huston Show” to critical acclaim. Lady J's compositions have received awards or placed in the: International Songwriter's Competition, Global Music Awards, Las Vegas Songwriter's Society, Hollywood Independent Music Awards, and the National Blues Museum. Her recording career has excelled since 2022 with single releases, and the 2023 album release, “Groove Me Baby”. The reviews have been outstanding, charting at #1 in multiple categories in the Roots Music Report, Collegiate, and International charting systems.
“This is, simply put, an outstanding album in every respect. The musicians dramatically underline Huston’s commanding presence and keep her fierce vocals front and center while she storms through the set. Even the slower numbers are steamy enough to fog your soul. It took long enough for Lady J to cook up this special musical feast; I’m ready for a second helping.
--Jim White, Blues Roadhouse
