About the Band
Andy Johnson is a middle Georgia roots music maker and two-time winner of the Atlanta Blues Challenge. In recent years he has released two full-length albums, 2023’s Roofdog and 2021’s Help Yourself. He was also the principal writer for the band Royal Johnson, who released two full albums and two EPs between 2016-2019.
“Dumpster Divin” is Johnson’s first songwriting collaboration with longtime bandmate and multi-instrumentalist Trey Dunnahoo. The two have performed for years in a variety of settings, both as a duo and in multiple group situations. The song was produced by southern music legend Paul Hornsby at his Muscadine Studio in Macon, Georgia, and mixed by Zach Berry.
Johnson fronts the band Roofdog, and is a member of Macon group The Restless Natives. He also performs frequently on Uncle Dave’s Waycross Stagecoach.
Notable co-bills in Johnson’s career include The Doobie Brothers, Willie Nelson, Grand Funk Railroad, Bob Margolin, Joan Osborne, Cowboy, Jimmy Hall, Stillwater, Jack Pearson, Lee Roy Parnell, David Goldflies, Randall Bramblett, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Avett Brothers, Greensky Bluegrass, The Steeldrivers, Drivin’ n’ Cryin’, Brent Cobb, Audley Freed, Infamous Stringdusters, Marcus King, Cody and Luther Dickinson, Roosevelt Collier, The Autumn Defense, Chris Knight, Turnpike Troubadours, Mike Kach, Boddy Lee Rodgers, Band of Heathens, Sunny War and Tall Tall Trees.
###
“Whether it’s a stripped-down folk number like ‘More than Me,’ or a swampy southern rock tune like ‘The Real Thing,’ Andy Johnson’s voice, playing and songwriting provide a direct connection to some of those iconic Macon bands of yore. All the while, the maintains his own authentic style.”
-Justin Cutway, 100.9 The Creek
“Andy Johnson piles a lot on this sonic plate – but to outstanding effect.”
–Aaron Irons, Sound and Soul, 100 Favorite Albums of 2021
“Take a big of Delta blues, mix it with some Allman Brothers-style Southern rock and a side serving of bluegrass and old-timey and you have an idea of what this roots troubadour does.”
-SC Festival of Discovery 2022 Program
“an eclectic bluesy sound with a soulful Southern twist.”
