Spearheaded by trumpet player / composer Daniel Nissenbaum, the NYC-based duotrio successfully mines a modular chamber music meets jazz sound on the 2020 album release of In The Bright And Deep. With their strong horn-based sound, duotrio shines a light on Nissenbaum’s classically-tinged trumpet, flugelhorn, piccolo trumpet and synths. Composing the music here, Daniel Nissenbaum is assisted by a number of musicians, featured in at least two different lineups, with backing that adds in a range of sonic textures—from quartet strings and assorted orchestral timbres to jazz rhythm section, saxophone horns, and more. With Nissenbaum’s neoclassical trumpet driving the sound forward, the compositional fare is equally diverse, including a cover from the Hello Dolly score to a duotrio version of a track composed by the U.K. shoegaze band Portishead. Adding to the diversity of the project, In The Bright And Deep was recorded in both the country of Holland and in Philadelphia PA. Having played with a incredible range of artists, including jazz icons Donald Byrd and Marcus Miller, as well as having backed up oldies and soul music acts like The Drifters, The Toys and The Marvellettes, you would think Daniel Nissenbaum would be better known. With its smart compositions and diverse crossover appeal, duotrio’s In The Bright And Deep will go a long way towards establishing Daniel Nissenbaum as a cutting-edge composer and recording artist on the contemporary jazz scene.
