Breaking new ground for the surf-rock instrumental guitar genre, Chicago-based band The Breakers continue on in 2021 with a new 7-song EP CD called A Date With Destiny. Much like their 2020 full-length CD Voodoo Treatment, the 2021 CD EP A Date With Destiny is filled with more hard-hitting surf-rock grooves that will blow away long time Pipeliners with a strong penchant for surf-rock instrumentals. Every track here is strong featuring main contributions from Breaker’s lead guitarist and composer Jim Abrahams backed by the tight rhythm section of Marc Lockett (drums) and Jayson Slater (bass). Every track here is a modern day classic of the genre. A Date With Destiny sets the table with the lead-off track 1, “Sub-Marine Time Machine”. The name of the song title is funnier than the actual song, which proves a super set-up for the wild imagination of guitarist Jim Abrahams that blends some mighty strange sound effects against a timeless riff-heavy, surf-rock instrumental. Track 2, “Turbulance” creates a sonic dust-up that is the choice sound for the Breakers rhythm section of Lockett and Slater while Jim’s pizzicato guitar picking turns the song to a classic 1960s style dance track. You can almost picture the kids dancing, frugging and twisting into a sonic frenzy. Track 3, a solidly 1960s style Ventures influenced pumper, “Quid Pro Quo” settles things down while still keeping the big beat front and center. On this track you can picture the surfers doing their thing out on the scenic ocean waves with The Breakers supplying an excellent soundtrack of sound. Track 4, “Big Question Mark” features a looping bass sound that again evokes the John Blakeley guitar sound in The Sandals. The take is truly one of the best Breakers tracks to date. Believe it or not, track 5 is actually a Breakers cover of the Bedrich Smetana composition, folk-classical favorite “The Moldau”, with the Breakers version sounding like an outtake theme song from a Dracula horror movie, that’s just how cool it is. Of course Czech composer Smetana lived in the early 1800’s so it’s very cool to see The Breakers turn “The Moldau” into a future signature surf-rock gem. The title track “A Date With Destiny” offers an update on the classic Sandals classic “The Endless Summer”, albeit with a fresher yet timeless vibe all its own. You can just picture the girls on the beach on a bright sunny day while spinning this track. John Blakeley eat your heart out! (just kidding JB) With its groovy twists and turns, this track will bring a smile and a tear to your eyes, all in the same song! With its hard hitting near metal grooves, the CD-closer “Po’ino” sounds more heavy metal than surf but never let it be said that The Breakers have ever shied away from pounding out a metallic groove. So there you have it. The Breakers continue to move hard and fast on their 2021 EP masterpiece, A Date With Destiny.
