A legend from the world of modern jazz piano, Garry Dial joins forces with acoustic bassist Jay Anderson on the 2022 CD release of Living A Dream We’re Not In. Cryptic title maybe, but the all-original music here is filled with a vivid sonic realism that transcends words. With Garry in the US Virgin Islands and Jay in NYC, the music was written and put together during the pandemic, starting in the Fall of 2020.

Renowned as a pianist, composer, producer and teacher, Garry Dial is in rare form here, combining his affinity for the spatial-sounding, piano-friendly style of Oscar Petersen, Dave Brubeck and Duke Ellington. Stand-up bass man Jay Anderson’s resume reads like a who’s who of jazz icons and with Living A Dream We’re Not In he remains an artist on the cutting edge of the current NYC jazz scene.

In a way, Living A Dream We’re Not In is a deep, subdued reflection of the pandemic era. Dial’s piano is well-recorded and the album has an overall dark, shimmering sound that is at times dreamlike in the spirit of minimalist classical composer Erik Satie. One look at Garry Dial’s resume is quite impressive and on Living A Dream We’re Not In he brings a depth of experience and expertise to an album certain to be acclaimed in the jazz world of 2022.
