As I write this review, Europe is at war again. So fittingly, after entering yet another challenging direction in our lifetimes, Another Language arrives as a fine introduction to the music of Sweden's singer-songwriter Henrik Af Ugglas. Henrik’s debut solo album, the 7-track 26 minute CD approaches pop as sung by a Swedish artist attempting, this time quite successfully, to sing in another language and he really gets his point across. It’s very endearing hearing a native Swede struggle with the brevity and levity of adapting lyrical ideas from his native lingo to another language and arrive at a truly fascinating sonic destination.

Another Language features Henrik on a variety of instruments with added performances by his brother Peder (rhythm guitars) and production by his wife Åsa Af Ugglas. Drums are skillfully performed by Christer Jansson. What is really special about Another Language is the way it was recorded. It has a kind of sophisticated Abbey Road vibe with its sunny disposition and spatial recording sound effects that breezes easily in and out. As Henrik told me, the first track ”War” was indeed inspired by the 2022 Ukraine war. It’s always fun to hear an artist of Henrik’s obviously gifted stature reach out and find his musical salvation in Another Language.
