Boston-area rockers The Grand Undoing reinvent their sound on the 2026 release of Songs For The Sleeping. A stunning follow-up to previous masterpieces, Sparks Rain Down From The Lights Of Love (2016) and In A Vigil State (2020), Songs For The Sleeping is their most potent and consistent album yet, and certainly their most confident and ingenious. The sound is stylishly enhanced by a rotating cast of players on various instruments resulting in a commanding presence. The songs form a sonic collective and the whole album seems to peak into a euphoric zenith.

Performed with an excellence reserved for the finest bands, The Grand Undoing pulls out all kinds of stops on Songs For The Sleeping. Kicking off the fuzzed-out rock desire of “Sing A New Morning” and culminating in the orchestral, prog-rock daring of “Now I’m Going Home”, to these ears, the 9-track / 42-minute album is the aural equivalent of driving the Hana Road to the frosty peaks of Mt. Haleakalā at 75 mph. Likewise, Songs For The Sleeping unwraps its own revelations and unmatched scenic / sonic wonders revealing a mind-blowing mix of melodic and lyrical gems carried from conception and cresting in a heavenly sonic afterglow.

With the central focus on the songs, guitar and vocal wizardry of Seth Goodman, the album revels in a psychedelic swirl of tremendous musical genius. Songs For The Sleeping is remarkably enhanced by Ted Powers, who helped produce, sang backing vocals, and played keyboards and guitar, and Keith Jacques, who also sang backing vocals and played guitar. Kurt Johnson also played some expert pedal steel and guitar on many tracks, with each player imparting their own unique and notable contributions.

Session drummer extraordinaire, Dave Mattacks, plays on several songs as well, while Dave Westner, the “secret weapon and reluctant drummer that grooves like no other” plays the drums on most of the other tracks. The rotating cast of players keeps the sound equally fresh and consistent from track to track. An indispensable album for musicians, musicologists and music lovers in the know, Songs For The Sleeping is an immaculate pop-rock song-cycle that becomes fully supercharged with each recurring spin.
