The accomplished Seattle-based roots artist Eli West joins herefirst with jazz guitarist Bill Frisell and rising Americana star Dori Freeman- later including Appalachian artists Anna Roberts Gevault and Elizabeth Laprelle- in understated takes on Waylon Jennings’ and Billy Joe Shaver’s “You Asked Me To” and Woody Guthrie’s “Lonesome Valley”, among others.  Frisell’s delicate dances around the charmingly modest vocals are particularly appealing.  West’s own guitar work highlights the instrumental versions of these same songs in the second half of the program, on which fiddler Christian Sedelmeyer also stands out.  All in all, a masterful less-is-more statement.
