Ruby Force is the alter-ego of singer-songwriter Erin McLaughlin, who was recently tagged by Rolling Stone as a country act to watch. Based out of Los Angeles and armed with a brazen confidence, this 10-song debut has yet to find a label, but once representatives hear this it will come in short order. Ruby Force/McLaughlin has a strong band behind her comprised of Eli Thomson, Richard Swift, Frank Lenz and Sean Watkins, all players with impeccable credentials. Videos on her Facebook page show a woman swathed in confidence and flirty sass and the songs herein reflect that. Her voice has a warm, familiar quality and the backing band is stellar. Lyrically, she writes of loves lost and found. “Memory,” for instance: “It’s been too long now/and I don’t know where he’s gone/Maybe to the bottom of the darkest sea.” “Dancing As I Go” has a harder, darker edge and “Diamonds” has a sweet groove and sounds like a song made for country radio and “Cowboy” is the standout on the disc. Ruby Force is an act to keep a close eye and ear on.
