Mindi Abair’s pugilistic vocal stance is the ideal complement to her insistently punchy sax work.  And given the time and space given to the latter here, one might safely assume that the horn is her preference.  The lyrical posturing of tracks such as “Pretty Good For A Girl”, “Had To Learn The Hard Way” and “Play To Win” set the stage for supercharged sax play that stands up easily to responding guitar assaults- witness her dialogue with axe-meister Joe Bonamassa on “Girl”.  Was Not Was lead vocalist Sweet Pea Atkinson’s ballad feature, Sly Stone’s “Let Me Hear It From You”, is a bona fide scene-stealer and instrumentals “Not That Kind Of Girl” and “Live My Life” stand out as well.
