Hailing from Waterloo, Canada, resonator guitarist and vocalist Sean Poluk’s “Never Going to Lose” is his third album collaboration with keyboard player, background vocalist and producer Edith Salazar. Musicians from Spain and Venezuela impart a contemporary, locomotive groove to the instrumental accompaniment. Their support and involvement bring a spellbinding feel to Poluk’s ten originals. Songs like “Little by Little,“ “Sometimes,” “I Don’t Mind” and “Everybody Lies” offer concise statements that evolve from Poluk’s blues roots and background. However, his signature groove is what makes him unique. While I was hoping for at least one or two driving up-tempo numbers that clearly showcased his resonator guitar playing, his music revolves more around a calibrated trance blues vocal styling laid down on a haunting musical canvas. That’s why this album is perhaps best categorized as world music with an impressionistic blues twang. (Joe Ross, Roots Music Report)
