This three CD set is a comprehensive overview of the legendary Memphis label. Chock full of familiar recordings by Albert King (“Born Under A Bad Sign”), Sam and Dave (“Soul Man” and More), Carla Thomas (“Gee Whiz” and More), William Bell, (“You Don’t Miss Your Water” and more) the funky Rufus Thomas “Walkin’ The Dog” and more), The Staple Singers (“Respect Yourself” and many more) Johnny Taylor (“Who’s Making Love” etc), Booker T & The MGs (“Green Onions” and more), Otis Redding (“Dock of the Bay” and more, Isaac Hayes (“Walk On By,” etc) and loads more from lesser known artists. Those lesser known artists are a treat, as well: The Veltones’ “Fool in Love,” basically a doowop tune with a spacey guitar, Wendy Rene’s “After Laughter, (Comes Tears)” reminiscent of one of the Spector girl groups, The Astors’ original “Candy,” a great group vocal, The Mad Lads’ “Don’t Have To Shop Around” from 1965, plus Linda Lyndell, The Soul Children, and the great Mel & Tim. Sixty songs of flat out musical joy from a label that lasted 15 years and continues to excite. Only complaint is that the personnel on each song is not listed. Otherwise, an absolute gem.
