Lyrics
The Highwayman
The Highwayman came riding
Up to the old inn door
Bess leaned out her window
She whispered, "Soon I’m yours."
But in the shadows were eyes
The stable hand jealously spied
"I'll be back with the gold" he heard the Highwayman say
“After tonight I'll come and take you away"
Before the light of day
Though Hell should bar my way
By the moonlight watch for me
That's when I will come for thee
That's when I will come for thee
King George's men came marching
Up to the Inn that a night
The stable hand had brought them
For love he’d been denied
And the price on her lover's head
They tied her to the foot of her bed
With a loaded musket aimed right at her breast
He said, "If you want to just warn him with this"
It was twelve when she heard him riding this way |
She fought hard till her fingers reached the gun
And she prayed afraid
There was just one way to help her lover escape
Gunfire lit up the dark
The warning bullet piercing her heart
She was moments too late to warn him off with her death
They shot him down whispering with his breath
They say when there's a full moon
And wind is in the air
The Highwayman comes riding
