Mike Bourne Band Album: Kansas City O'Clock Label: Overton Music Genre(s): Jump BluesBlues Posted By: Duane Verh

Review
Mike Bourne & crew deliver a thoroughly satisfying set of jump-blues and related fare, serving up sounds both true to the roots and fresh in feel. The KC-based guitarist’s casual-sounding mastery of the genre shows in both his vocal and instrumental work. “Too Old To Be Young” and the title track are standouts among the originals present and a cover of John Hahn’s ‘Dive Bar Romance” should garner attention also. A legion of players contribute nice sax & piano work throughout as well.
Wayne Wilkinson Trio Album: Holly Tunes Label: Self-Release Genre(s): Christmas: Jazz Posted By: Robert Silverstein

Review
On his seventh self-produced album, entitled Holly Tunes, Colorado-based guitarist Wayne Wilkinson strikes Yuletide gold with his 11-track, 49-minute album. Inspired by the now historic Joe Pass X-mas album Six String Santa, Wayne Wilkinson picks up on the holiday cheer and the results are pleasantly surprising. For Holly Tunes, the artist enlists his fabled Benedetto archtop guitar. The warm guitar sound is omnipresent throughout the album.
On the all instrumental Holly Tunes, Wilkinson is joined by his expert trio rhythm section of Andy Burtschi (bass) and Scott Barbier (drums) with special guest Thomas J. Dawson Jr. adding in piano, strings and organ on most tracks. In addition to his keyboards, Dawson also produced and mixed the album. A good example of the chemistry between Wilkinson and Thomas J Dawson Jr. can be heard

The Kentucky Colonels were a legendary California bluegrass band of the 1960s that achieved national prominence. Born in Maine to French Canadian parents, the White Brothers (Roland, Clarence and Eric) moved to Southern California in the 1950s. As youngsters, they won a talent contest which landed them a job as regulars on a Los Angeles television show called “The Town Hall Party.” In 1957, banjo player Billy Ray Lathum joined the band, the group had been renamed as The Kentucky Colonels, and in 1959, they began playing regularly at the Ash Grove, one of L.A.’s most prestigious folk clubs. Fiddler Scott Stoneman was added and Eric White was replaced by Roger Bush on bass. LeRoy Mack (McNees) also joined the group, playing Dobro. In 1960, they appeared on one episode of the Andy Griffith TV Show. Their albums included Appalachian Swing (World Pacific, 1964), Long

Standing out on harmonica ace Bob Corritore’s current archival drop are spirited-sounding vocal performances from drummer Chico Chism- “Five Long Years”, “Li’l Ed” Williams- “Hip Shakin’”, pianist Henry Gray “Showers Of Rain” and Robert Lockwood Jr., taking on stepdad Robert Johnson’s “Ramblin’ On My Mind”. Mr. C’s blues harp always seems to fit, whomever he’s backing.
Rick Keller Album: Heroes Label: Vegas Genre(s): Fusion Posted By: Robert Silverstein

Review
The city of Las Vegas may be known best as a vacation destination, its proximity to the Palm Desert and for its casino gambling, yet there has also been a fine jazz scene growing there as well. Also in Las Vegas is Vegas Records, a cool record company that has released music by a range of jazz artists. A recent release on Vegas Records sure to attract the attention of jazz fans is Heroes, the third solo album by veteran sax maven Rick Keller.
With 14 tracks clocking in around 70 minutes, Heroes pays tribute to some of Rick’s major jazz influences. For example, the lead-off track, a tribute to jazz guitar legend Pat Metheny, is titled simply “For Pat”. Clocking in at just under eight minutes, the track is a perfect showcase for Rick’s sax solos, coupled with some tasty piano work by Dave Siegel and the fleet-fingered guitar work of Camilo Velandia. An excellent
